20 December 2025

Fellow Chapter 29 Members and Friends:

We’ve had an amazing year filled with beautiful aircraft, wonderful gatherings, and good food. Unfortunately, after looking at the weather forecast for Saturday and discussing it with others, we have decided to cancel the December 20th Display Day.

This year is winding to a close and I’m left wondering where the year went!Looking forward to 2026, I would like to plan for some chapter social events besides the monthly Display Days and Young Eagles flights. We’ll have a springtime lunch event at the airport and if that’s well attended perhaps another in the fall? And now that more pilots are attending the Display Days we should incorporate some lunch fly-outs to follow those events.

One thing we will be doing soon is a “roll call”. Not having collected dues for several years now it would be interesting to see our actual membership roster. Subsequent reactivation of dues collection will also help determine the viability of our Chapter, not so much from a monetary perspective, but as a measure of interest.

In other news around the airport, Drew Detsch has sold his beautiful Pitts Special N21JH to a young woman in Southern California. Upon the eve of its departure, I asked Drew to tell us a bit about this airplane that he had flown, raced, competed, modified, and maintained for 43 years:

Clint McHenry, the dean of competition aerobatics found Lulu for me in Florida. In 1983 she was what was then referred to a Super Pitts.I took a second mortgage on my house to buy her.

We’ve had a great life together with marvelous adventures as an active competition pilot in the 80’s & 90’s as well as a Reno Racer where we took 1st place in the Silver in 1991.

Our last acro competiton was in 2014, since that time she’s been mostly just a sport plane with occasional acro and those wonderful tight patterns at KHWD.

Turning 75 this year, I realized that after 43 years without a scratch on her it was time to hang up my helmet.

Lulu has been purchased by a wonderful young acro pilot who can’t wait to transition into her. She’s in for a great adventure.

As for myself, I’ve purchased a 1943 Interstate L-6 from a restorer. As soon as the transponder is installed I’ll be back in the pattern.

(I’m looking forward to a flight in that L-6, the visibility should be amazing.)

Finally, I’d like to make a “shout-out” and express thanks to a couple of “behind the scenes” individuals, Naka Lopez and Ross Bausone.

We were first introduced to Naka when he and his mom Deena came to a display day a couple of years ago. Naka was awarded an EAA Ray Scholarship with which he obtained his private pilot’s license and is now in Southern California at the Sling Academy working on his advanced certificates; his goal is to be a professional pilot. Naka has been sending out the monthly newsletter for which we’re very appreciative. Thanks to Naka and we’re all rooting for you as achieve your goals!

Ross Bausone moved from Castro Valley to Reno a few years ago, but was a partner in a Citabria 7KCAB with Steve Kauzlarich. He is our webmaster and has been doing a great job keeping things up to date. Thanks Ross for being a good friend and chapter member! ...Thank you Harry, and all for contributions. It makes this job interesting!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you! I look forward to seeing more of you next year…

Vintage Aircraft Association Chapter 29
Whether you fly, build, restore or simply enjoy vintage airplanes and aviation, you are welcome to attend our events and join our chapter. We are a group of aviation enthusiasts, aircraft restorers, and pilots who get together with like minded people to share ideas, exchange information, encourage safety, serve the local aviation community, and have a lot of fun doing so. Please come to our next meeting or event as our guest.

Located in Hayward, California, this Chapter was originally created as an EAA Antique/Classic chapter. In 1999 EAA changed the name of the Antique/Classic division to EAA Vintage Aircraft Association (VAA). Although this is a Vintage chapter, our members consist of pilots and non-pilots, singles, couples and families. Our pilots fly homebuilts, warbirds, light sport and production aircraft.

Our chapter is part of the worldwide network of Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and Vintage Aircraft Association (VAA) chapters. VAA brings together people from around the world who share an interest in the aircraft of yesterday. Since it was established in 1971, VAA has been working to keep aviation history alive.

EAA embodies the spirit of aviation through the world's most engaged community of aviation enthusiasts. EAA's 160,000 plus members enjoy the fun and camaraderie of sharing their passion for flying, building and restoring recreational aircraft. To find out more about EAA and our programs and services, please visit the EAA home page at eaa.org
